Sexually Active Youth
I think it's downright hilarious how youths nowadays (meaning in the recent years) put pleasure above anything else. Sure, it's definitely recommended to have pleasure, but everything in moderation. What sparked this post is something that has been bugging me for a few years now. It's that youths are getting sexually active at increasingly younger ages. I need not quote any newspaper reports or studies, I'm sure we all know about cases where 16 year-olds (come on, MTV, sensationalising being pregnant at such a young age?) or even 12 year-olds getting pregnant.
Are youths nowadays so blind to the effects of having sex? Not only are you increasing your chances of STDs, has everyone forgotten about the part where the girl can get pregnant? First off, let's discard the traditional thinking that sex is the ultimate show of love and that it is done after marriage. I would love to subscribe to this notion, and still partially am hoping this is held in people's hearts, but let's face it, with the advent of internet, pornography is propagated even to kids, the sex trade is booming, and human trafficking is a more profitable business than most.
Why I say youths are blind? It seems that they value immediate pleasure above their lifetime happiness. Oh sure, there are plenty of cases where teenage girls marry the guy who fathered their child. But how many more cases where the father runs off, leaving their pregnant ex to either make the decision of abortion, giving up the child for adoption, or taking care of the child by herself? Oh please, I'm not making girls or rather females to be victims here. But the truth is that women have more to lose if they get pregnant, especially so if they do not have the support of people around her, especially the father of the child. How can people be so short-sighted and seek only short-term pleasure? My god, do they not know the responsibilities of a parent? The cost incurred to raise a child (human capital investment? Let's not get to Econs-y here shall we)? The mentally and physically draining day-to-day living? Wow, all of a sudden becoming pregnant seems like hell but no, what I am saying is that youths or teens do not have the means to take care of a child. Some youths can't even handle their own responsibilities, yet want to engage in such acts which may result in not-so-ideal consequences?
I still believe in the notion "no sex before marriage", and there is absolutely no way anyone is going to sway my beliefs. That being said, I am not judging people who do. If you are mature enough, have the means to raise a child (i.e. finances), know what you want in life, and are able to face the consequences, supposing the gets pregnant, I have nothing to say. If you have the capability and are responsible enough, no-one can question your actions.

On another note (which will be really short cause Human Trafficking is another issue I feel really strongly about, and I really could talk about it for AGES), I watched the movie/documentary Human Trafficking (2005) about maybe 4 years ago, and I vowed to help in some way when I can. I feel like I have decided that this is the time in my life where I could do something to change at least a small part of this situation, and as soon as exams are over I am going to do more research on ways to help.
Just wanted to get this on my blog, cause I haven't written in my journal for more than a year already, and typing is just a quicker and easier way to "pen" my thoughts down.
