I don't know what's wrong now. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. I just don't know what to do now.
To me, the world reduces to relativity. Every thing is relative. One might point out that this is a small price to pay in our globalising world. Without a doubt, relativity and comparison (which is a debatable point in itself, as Fortescue said, "Comparisons are odious") do have positive effects, such as being the motivation for people (on a micro level) or countries (macro scale) to better themselves. However, on a more personal and individual level, the consequences could never be more adverse.
For example, one country is poor because as compared to another, its GDP is lower. One person has low productivity than another because the speed at which he or she does things is slower. A student is clever because the other students in the class are not scoring as well. A girl/ boy is good-looking because the rest of the people around them are less than average looking.
If everything is relative, even if we set certain standards of comparison, what is the point of ranking systems, beauty contests, exams, sporting competitions? Another notable point is that these standards of comparison are fluid and fluctuate. Who has the right to set these standards of comparison? I agree that it is through these events that people pursue self-betterment and in many or most cases, they are successful. But what happens if there are contestations on the "winner", based on the very fact that everything is relative? People's perceptions are subjective and not everyone would be basing their judgements on the same level.
If so, what is the point of trying to be perfect?
